Duties and Responsibilities

The Grant County Area Plan Commission serves many functions for the community and consists of multiple functions:
  • Staff members
  • Plan Commission Board
  • Board of Zoning Appeals
  • Jurisdiction over the Towns of:
    • Jonesboro
    • Fairmount
    • Matthews
    • Upland
    • Van Buren
    • Sweetser
    • Rural Grant County 

Duties of the Office include but are not limited to:
  • Maintain zoning maps 
  • Enforce the zoning ordinance, subdivision ordinance, and wireless facilities tower ordinance 
  • Maintain master and comprehensive plan 
  • Issue and maintain improvement location and building permits (Marion City issues its own permits) 
  • Issue and maintain change of use and substitution applications 
  • Inspect structures according to current Indiana Building Codes 
  • Inspect and enforce any violations to the zoning ordinance (i.e. building too close to property lines, illegal business, home occupations)
  • Take petitions for re-zoning, subdivisions, variances and special exceptions and
    • Gather all information necessary for the petition 
    • Gather data on the site the petition is requested for 
    • Gather any data the board members request about the petition
