Emergency Management Agency

Welcome to the Grant County Emergency Management Agency home page. This site has been developed to provide you information about the Grant County Emergency Management Agency, individual emergency preparedness for the hazards we face in Grant County, and how we can mitigate their effects.

The Grant County Emergency Management Agency directs, controls, and coordinates response efforts on behalf of the County Commissioners during a major disaster. The Agency also assists both public and private entities in developing mitigation plans to lessen the impact of disasters, through hazardous identification and risk assessment. Annually our staff collaborates, develops, reviews and updates plans which are in place to address specific hazards within our county. These include plans for high-hazard dams, chemical facilities, day cares, personal care homes, skilled nursing facilities, schools, pandemic threat, mass care, mass casualty, mass fatality, drought, agricultural incidents, continuity of operations and transportation emergencies.

We sincerely hope that you will take the time to browse through the information on our site. Being prepared for emergencies or disasters is your responsibility and should not be taken lightly. Tips on how you can prepare yourself are offered under the tab labeled "Planning & Preparedness".

Grant County EMA hopes that this information will be used to protect you, your family and your property from any disaster, whether it be natural or man-made. We welcome any comments and suggestions that you have concerning our website or our program. Please contact us by phone at (765) 651-2410 or by email.

Nixle

Nixle Logo for Emergency Alerts
Grant County is now using an online service, called Nixle, to
communicate with citizens.  Stay up-to-date on happenings in your neighborhood through email and text messages.

Nixle is the first secure and identity-certified communication service that allows local, county and state law enforcement agencies to connect with local residents
over cell phone, email and web. Updates will be limited to weather and specific hazards to Grant County, IN.

Registration is FREE, SIMPLE, and SECURE!

While we do not issue a large volume of messages, we believe that this will be a helpful tool in directly alerting Grant County residents of events relating to public safety, general advisories, and in the event of an emergency - critical or useful information.

Only specific warnings for Grant County residents will be sent out via text such as: tornadoes, severe weather, flooding, travel alerts/watches/warnings, and hazardous material incidents. Attached to these messages will be the appropriate actions to take to stay safe.

Because text messages must be kept short, a link will be included in the text message directing you to the web portion of the message which will go into greater details on the situation, if you are using a smartphone. You can also view any current message issued by going to  Nixle.com and in the box that says "Enter your zip code to see what's happening where you live" enter your zip code. You will then be able to click on and view any active message from Grant County Emergency Management.

Grant County also has the Nixle system set to automatically send a message to users for the following National Weather Service notifications: TORNADO WARNING, SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING and HAZARDOUS MATERIALS WARNING. This means you will receive these weather notifications as soon as the National Weather Service issues them.

This is a system the county can use to alert or advise you of a dangerous situation and also we can use it to deliver the most up to date information during a disaster such as contact and shelter information.

To sign up and begin receiving Alerts and Advisories:
  • The preferred method is to go to Nixle - Sign Up which will also create a Nixle account for you to modify how you receive your messages and what agencies and messages you want to receive. Once you have a Nixle account you can add multiple addresses from around the world and receive messages from other agencies if they use the Nixle system. This is especially nice if you have relatives or friends in other locations you would like to be informed of emergencies or disasters.
  • To quickly sign up and immediately begin receiving text messages on your cell phone, enter GRANTEMA in the message box of a text and send it to 888777. At your convenience you can then go to www.nixle.com and sign up for an account to modify your message preferences.
There is no cost to sign up and receive alerts; however, your standard text rates may apply to receive messages.

Please help us spread the word about Nixle by getting friends and family to sign up for alerts. Also, let them know that they can simply go to www.nixle.com enter a Grant County zip code to view any alerts, advisories and current information during an emergency or disaster, even if they are not signed up to receive alerts. Think of it as a message board anyone can access for the most up to date instructions and information during a disaster.

To find out more about the Nixle Alert system, please click on the tab to the left labeled "Nixle - Notification System".  If you have any concerns or questions regarding the Nixle system, please contact Grant County Emergency Management Agency.
